God’s Presence in The Storm

On Sunday August 28 our area was hit by Tropical Storm Irene. Often when tragedies like this happens people ask ‘ Where is God in all this?’. Psalm 46 gives an answer to God’s presence in the midst of the storm:

Ps 46:1-3,11 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging … The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (NIV)

There are three significant points in this brief passage that let us know God’s presence when the “waters roar and foam”. First, He is a very present help. He does not hide from us; He draws himself near to us to apply His mercy and grace in the midst of tragedy. Secondly He is our refuge. A refuge is a shelter. It is a place of safety during a storm. It is where we go to find help and security. God promises to be our shelter during the midst of the storm. Thirdly, he is our strength. In other words He gives us the strength to withstand the force of difficult situations.

Where is God in the midst of the storm? He is there to apply His wonderful grace. God’s grace is our shelter and strength.
